A brief veiw of the LT1 engine
The LT1 engine was in production for 5 years also know as the generation II of the small block Chevy. First appearing in the Chevrolet’s flag ship the Corvette in. 1992, one important thing to remember is the LT1 has a reverse coolant system this was done to raise the compression ratio. Many of the parts for the first generation 350 are not exchangeable with the LT1 due to it being a different design.
The cheapest performance mods for a stock LT1 are as follows 1. Cold air induction easy to install and gives a slightly different rumble to the exhaust 2. a throttle body bypass also easy to install and allows cooler air to pass through the throttle body 3 a throttle body air foil which goes in the center of the throttle body smoothes out the air flow.3 A lower thermostat 180 or 160 with a power chip or a power tuner that goes into the cars computer. 4 For manual transmissions buy a CAGs skip shift eliminator this eliminates the 2 and 3 gear lock out.5 A cat back exhaust system for a freer flowing exhaust system, for really free flowing exhaust headers to an X exhaust system. The best bang is of course a 150 hp nitrous set up.
Many of the LT4 engine parts are exchangeable with the LT1. Get an LT4 knock sensor as it is more reliable then the LT1 knock sensor. There is a conversion kit which consists of the following LT4 heads, intake 1.6 Roller Rockers LT4 "Hot Cam" GM sells a package as well as some company’s the kit runs about 2500 dollars and will bump up the hp to 425 on a dyno which would be a 15 to 20 percent loss through the transmission 15 for manual and 20 for automatic. If you go for the LT4 package you might as well upgrade the stock throttle body from 48mm to 52mm or even as high as 58 this is mostly for stroked LT1s to 383 cubic inches.
